Terms & Disclaimers

Please read these terms carefully before using Safer Catch™. By using this platform, you acknowledge and agree to the limitations and conditions described below.

This is an educational tool — not a substitute for official guidance.

Always consult your state health department or environmental agency for the most current, location-specific fish consumption advisories before consuming sport-caught fish. Safer Catch™ does not provide medical advice.

Educational Purpose Only

Safer Catch™ is an educational public health information platform. All content, tools, advisories, guidance, and recommendations provided on this website are for general informational and educational purposes only.

Nothing on this platform constitutes medical advice, dietary guidance, clinical nutrition recommendations, or a substitute for advice from a licensed healthcare provider, registered dietitian, or public health official.

Always consult a qualified healthcare professional before making dietary decisions, particularly if you are pregnant, nursing, immunocompromised, or managing a chronic health condition.

Advisory Data — No Warranty

Fish consumption advisory data displayed on this platform is synthesized from publicly available sources including state health departments, state environmental protection agencies, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), and the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA). This data is updated periodically and is NOT a real-time data feed.

Safer Catch™ makes no representations or warranties of any kind — express or implied — about the completeness, accuracy, timeliness, reliability, suitability, or availability of any advisory information presented.

Fish-consumption advisories are published and periodically updated by state, Tribal, territorial, local, and federal authorities. Update schedules, sampling methods, and coverage vary by jurisdiction — Safer Catch does not assume a uniform revision cycle. Always verify the most current advisory directly with the responsible agency before consuming sport-caught fish.

Safer Catch™ does not issue fish-consumption advisories. Where an official advisory exists, that advisory governs. Where Safer Catch cannot verify an authoritative advisory, it will say so rather than generate a consumption recommendation.

Platform Tools — Limitations

Check My Catch, Advisory Explorer, the Fish Species Library, General Fish Guidance, and the Regional Advisory Map are decision-support and educational tools only. They surface and translate published advisory information; they do not account for individual health status, specific waterbody conditions, seasonal variation, or real-time contamination events.

Safer Catch™ does not use a proprietary numerical score to generate meal-frequency or health recommendations. General species information is never presented as a substitute for a location-specific official advisory.

AI-assisted features are used to help identify waterbodies, locate the responsible agency, and summarize official documents in plain language. They are experimental, they are not authoritative, and they should not be relied upon to supply advisory values that Safer Catch has not verified against an official source. Always verify against the official agency link provided.

Location detection features use approximate geographic methods and may produce inaccurate results near state borders or in regions with complex boundaries. Geographic state assignment is advisory only.

Limitation of Liability

To the maximum extent permitted by applicable law, Safer Catch™, its operators, contributors, volunteers, advisors, and fiscal sponsor Media Alliance (EIN: 94-2875532) expressly disclaim all liability for any loss, injury, illness, or damage — direct, indirect, incidental, consequential, or punitive — arising from reliance on information, tools, or guidance provided through this platform.

Use of this platform is entirely at your own risk. The platform is provided 'as-is' and 'as available' without any warranty of any kind.

Third-Party Links & Sources

This platform contains links to external websites operated by state and federal agencies, academic institutions, and other third parties. These links are provided for informational convenience only. Safer Catch™ does not control, endorse, or assume responsibility for the content, accuracy, or availability of any third-party website.

References to specific agencies, programs, or publications do not imply endorsement of Safer Catch™ by those agencies or institutions.

Location & Data Use

Safer Catch™ uses location information for one purpose: to identify which official fish-consumption advisory applies to the water you are asking about. You may enter a ZIP code, city, place name, or state, or allow your browser to share approximate coordinates. Providing location is optional; the tools work with less precision without it.

Location information you provide is not processed exclusively on your device. Depending on the feature you use, a place name, ZIP code, state, or geographic coordinates may be transmitted to external services in order to complete the lookup. These include the application's own hosted backend functions (operated on the Base44 platform), third-party geocoding and place-lookup services such as OpenStreetMap Nominatim, and AI language-model services used to help locate and summarize official advisory documents. Those services process the values they receive under their own terms and privacy practices.

Safer Catch™ does not build location profiles and does not intentionally maintain a history of the places you look up as part of a user account. Because lookups are transmitted to and handled by external infrastructure and third-party services, Safer Catch cannot guarantee that no operational or diagnostic logging occurs anywhere in that chain, and it makes no retention promise on behalf of those providers. If you prefer not to transmit a precise location, enter a broader value such as a state or county rather than exact coordinates.

Safer Catch™ does not sell or rent personal data, and does not share it with third parties for advertising or other commercial purposes.

Organizational & Fiscal Sponsorship Disclosure

Safer Catch™ is an independent public health education initiative fiscally sponsored by Media Alliance, a California-based 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization (EIN: 94-2875532). Fiscal sponsorship means Media Alliance provides legal and financial infrastructure for the project; it does not imply Media Alliance endorses, controls, or is responsible for the specific content, tools, or advisory guidance published by Safer Catch™.

Safer Catch™ does not accept advertising, sponsored content, or industry funding from fishing, food industry, or environmental services companies.

Safer Catch™ is supported through charitable contributions, grants, institutional partnerships, and other mission-aligned funding administered through its fiscal sponsor. Safer Catch is not itself a separate 501(c)(3). Organizations interested in supporting the work can contact hello@safercatch.org.

Changes to These Terms

These terms and disclaimers may be updated periodically to reflect changes in platform features, applicable law, or organizational structure. Continued use of the platform following any updates constitutes acceptance of the revised terms.
